This article forms part of a post-graduate thesis written by our Lay reader, Barbara Hardy M.A.
In this section we will look at the range of images in St Luke’s Church. Details of the actual manufacturers of the glass have proved impossible to trace although many of the names of those involved in the building of the church were given in the report of its consecration:
The whole of the work has been carried out most satisfactorily by the contractors, Messrs Weatherley & Rymer of York from the designs of the architects, Messrs Adams and Kelley of 27 Park Square, Leeds.
There is also a glazier named as Mr J Hall of Mercury Office Yard but since he was also responsible for the plumbing and gas fitting, we can assume that he only installed the plain glass that fills most of the church windows.
